Lakewood 1st Generation P-223 Box Fan | Initial Checkout
A Lakewood 1st Generation P-223 box fan given to me by @torythefanman at the fan meet this year. After nearly a decade of watching videos, it was nice to finally meet up with him in person.
This is the first 1st Generation unit I've had experience with. The blades are fairly similar to the 2nd Generation, but sound different and move the air differently as well. The McMillan shaded pole motor has the square stater, which I believe dates this back to the mid 70s.
The fan is in overall excellent condition considering the age and is fully operational. The blade is significantly out of balance, but that's nothing that can't be fixed. This is a really nice piece for my collection and a great memory of that day.

This is a Cool-Breeze branded 16" 3-speed oscillating desk/table fan type EB24616. There was one of these units in my 4th grade classroom. I remember it vividly. I had never seen another out in the wild since the 4th grade, in fact I've never been able to find even a picture or video of the exact ...

Lakewood HV-9 9" High Velocity Fan In The Box

The initial checkout of an Air Care Industries branded 1500-watts electric heater model 6600, or 'Big Heat'. This is a very unique unit with an unusual design I've never seen another like it. The blower is powered by ...

An Air Care branded 50-CFM bathroom exhaust fan model AC2650 from 1989. It appears to be unused still in the box, but unfortunately the box is heavily damaged from water and tape. It works fine, and moves an OK amount of air for the size, but is quite loud for what it's doing, as most of these smaller fans seem to be. The initial checkout of a Fedders 40-pints dehumidifier model FDHF402L. The unit was made in Korea by Goldstar, most likely in the late 80s. It still utilizes R-12 refrigerant, which is very late in the R12 era; most were using 22, 500, or 134 by now. It utilizes entirely shaded pole motors, which results in a very high power draw. The power consumption isn't for nothing though, the machine pul...

I had a 1991-92 model, but it died because people in my family don't even take care of it. I am pissed off because these were really tough built fans! they last longer and more reliable than the shit they make today. They need to get their act together and stop caring about the money and bring a little bit of quality.

The k mart fans model number is "K - 223". Probably replaced the "P" for the "K" just to indicate it's from k mart. The first generation of these fans are from the 70s. with the second gen being the 80s and of course the third generation being around at the 90s. Maybe you should do a comparison of all 3 as no one had ever done that before. Also it's cool you finally got to see Tory the fan man in person as i've been watching both of your channels over the years.

What a very unique model. Looks great and deserves to be out in the open where it can be seen as it operates. The bucket full mechanism is something else though that makes this hard to use. I believe it may be some type of pressure switch as the air pressure betweens the bucket and the shut off switch increases its saposted to shut it off. However based on your test with it and seeing it do nothing to shut it off, this auto shut off mechanism has likely failed and a new system may be in order unfortunately. I think this type of mechanism was prone to fail on these units.

If I could meet up with you, I'll give you a good quality vintage lawn mower. You've complained about not being able to find a good quality lawn mower and the modern one you have is prone to lots of failures. Are only recalls seeing three first generation Lakewood box fans one of them I'm unsure if it is plastic or metal in terms of blade material. The first one I remembered seeing was a top of the line Lakewood box fan in burnt orange that was at my middle school in the maintenance room that was the one I could not tell the blade material of. The second one I seen was a JCPenney branded one with a yellow square cabinet. This fan was located at a tractor museum. That museum had several notable fans including a transition model 200i with a braced blade. 2nd gen Kmart K223 box fan. A 1960s Lasko box fan a mid-2000s waterworks box fan with the five wing blade. The last one was a orange Lakewood s223 that was located in a horse barn at my county Fair. I was actually able to obtain this fan which was awesome because I first remembered seeing it several years ago and for like 2 years the fan was missing. My apologies if my grammar is incorrect it is really late at night and I'm about to go to bed.

Massey is an actual Chinese company and OEM, it's not a Walmart store brand. It has a website too. I think it rebranded itself PMX, then reverted to Massey and now it seems to have disappeared. But some of the knockoffs still live on. One of the more well known ones was sold at Big Lots under its Climate Keeper store brand. There was also one at Christmas Tree Shops (CTS, now defunct) under Nantucket Breeze, Ocean State Job Lot under Penguin, and Target under RE. Weird cord with the white stripe, looks like a cord for a television or stereo receiver.

When I got my Lasko Galaxy 12” model, as I was cleaning the blade, I noticed that there was some sort of thin sheen of stuff that just wouldn’t come off, just like you showed. I wonder if that is some sort of reaction in the plastic or something that comes with age.

This came from a flea market that's 2 hours away, I only get to it once a year usually. It is the biggest one I've ever been to. I had gone through 75% of it and found nothing. Just as I thought it would be a bust, I came across a booth with an acre full of junk that borderline looked like a landfill. It was so overwhelming I had to walk through three times to make sure I didn't miss anything. There were at least a dozen fans, all good and some rare ones, but many that we either had or were too far beyond repairing. On the third walkthrough, I saw this and an SMC TH-12 together under a table. The cord on this was sprawled out across the gravel and people were walking over it. I would've taken a picture but I didn't want to risk getting kicked out because I was not leaving without those fans. I brought them to the front to where there were two old guys running the thing. I asked how much, the first guy says $10 each. Outrageous. I asked $10 for the two which was still outrageous, and the guy gave me an attitude and says I had to check with the other guy who was talking to someone else. I waited for the other guy, and when he was done, without me asking, he told me $5 each. Perfect. (Oh yeah, and the first guy overheard that and scolded him for giving me a discount LOL.) I need to know who made these things as much as you need to know how to fix a warped plastic blade. These and the Duracrafts were the first fans I ever saw and are fully responsible for getting me started. It was tough giving this and the gray one away. Maybe you know someone with a blue Lakewood or black Hampton Bay HV for trade.

When I was recently servicing it, I found the date code on the motor toward the front. I think it's somewhere around 1951, so it's quite old. It's still working amazingly well for its age, which definitely shows that the old stuff that wasn't made in China was built to last.
